Preschool FAQs

What age should my child start preschool?

The most significant factor for a child starting preschool is their readiness rather than their age. For most children, that readiness happens somewhere between 2 and 3 years of age. The two main elements of a child being ready for preschool are their communication skills and their comfort with being away from home or caregivers for hours at a time. Future Minds Montessori enrolls children from 2 to 6 years of age, and all of our programs include support structures to help children adapt to being away from home.

Importantly, preschool readiness does not require your child to be completely independent. Rather, readiness involves having a few key traits developed to a certain point, including:

  • Being able to follow simple directions
  • Showing curiosity
  • Being okay with temporary separation from parents
  • Beginning to interact with other children

Our program will also nurture each of these traits, helping our learners build confidence and social skills

The Montessori philosophy has several key points that differ from traditional learning environments. Rather than opposing traditional methods, Montessori highlights certain elements of established learning techniques and builds the experience around those. The main concepts include an emphasis on:

  • Hands-on learning
  • Independence
  • Mixed-age interaction
  • Learning matched to the child’s pace

The approach focuses on multidimensional growth in each child rather than simply equipping them with rote knowledge. Our programs and materials aim to build:

  • Practical skills
  • Math competency
  • Reading readiness
  • Sensory awareness
  • Social comfort and skills
  • And more

Yes! A child does not have to be a natural social butterfly to thrive in a Montessori setting. Though our programs do focus on social interactions, they can actually be better for shy children than traditional schooling. Rather than requiring all children to engage equally, Montessori learning has a flexibility that allows children to participate at their own pace. This can help shy children gradually become more comfortable with social situations rather than retracting further into their shyness.

Notably, Montessori is not designed to “eliminate” shyness in a subtractive way. Rather, it involves an additive process that gives children opportunities to build their confidence through small successes.

Choosing a preschool is a big decision, as the environment will play a large role in your child’s growth and development during early childhood. The right preschool or daycare needs several factors to be a safe, nurturing place for your child. We recommend looking for a preschool with:

  • Experienced caregivers and teachers
  • Age-appropriate curriculum
  • Flexible scheduling
  • Established safety and security protocols
  • Open, consistent communication with parents

Preschool is not solely about academic preparation. A healthy preschool or daycare program will support foundational skills and developmental milestones in young children. Some of the key areas of growth we aim to develop include:

  • Early reading and writing skills
  • Number recognition
  • Fine motor development
  • Independence
  • Listening skills
  • Social skills (e.g., sharing, cooperation)
  • Problem-solving

A mixed-age preschool classroom is a far more natural environment for fostering growth than keeping children limited to their age-specific cohort. We implement mixed-age classrooms due to benefits such as:

  • Older children have the opportunity to gain confidence and social skills by helping younger ones.
  • Younger children can learn by modeling skills or actions of older ones.
  • Children can experience collaboration across age groups.
  • Children gain respect and patience for different stages of learning.

Future Minds offers highly flexible options for families, including both part-time and full-time attendance.

  • Part-time preschool schedules are best for families who want to incorporate structured learning and social environments into their child’s routines.
  • Full-time preschool offers a longer period of daily care and routine.

Yes. Future Minds Montessori provides two healthy snacks daily as part of the prepared school environment. Our planned nutrition helps children stay energized and supported throughout their daily learning and play.

We’re so grateful for the caring teachers at FMM that helped both our sons in their pre-school years. Pros: flexibility with p/t to f/t scheduling (3-5 days, midday to early evening pickup), affordable monthly tuition, fun activities on-site & special class performances, plus a summer program add-on for a very nominal supply fee.
